National Sports Festival : Western Province clinch President's Trophy Chris Dhambarage reporting from Badulla Western Province with a total of 237 points retained the President's trophy and the overall title for another year at the 30th National Sports Festival organised by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports and concluded at the Vincent Dias Stadium in Badulla yesterday. Western Province underlined their supremacy as they won a total of 64 gold medals, 51 silver medals and 51 bronze medals. Central Province won a total of 32 gold medals, 30 silver medals and 34 bronze medals. North Western Province won 19 gold medals, 25 silver medals and 19 bronze medals. Southern Province won 12 gold medals, 15 silver medals and 20 bronze medals. North Central Province won ten gold medals, 8 silver and 13 bronze medals. Sabaragamuwa Province also won ten gold medals, 16 silver and 23 bronze medals. Uva Province the hosts won 6 gold medals, 7 silver medals and 12 bronze medals. North Eastern Province won only one gold medal, 2 silver medals and 4 bronze medals. Meanwhile Niluka de Silva of North Central Province established a new meet record in the women's 1500 metres final. She took the gold medal clocking 4 minutes 35.70 seconds while erasing the previous best of 4 minutes 36.05 seconds set by Keshani Samarakoon of Southern Province in 1994. Yasasiri Ajith of North Western Province was selected as the best performer in the track and field events in the men's category for his performance in the 400 metres hurdles. Sujani Buddhika of Southern Province was selected as the best performer in the women's category for her effort in the 200 metres final. National record holder from the Sabaragamuwa Province Sujeewa Nilmini Jayasena's hopes of winning her second gold medal came to an end when she was forced to withdraw with an injury in the women's 5000 metres final. In her absence D. A. Inoka of Central Province went on to win the gold medal with a timing of 17 minutes 21.96 seconds. Western Province clinched the gold medal in the men's soccer tournament when they beat North Western Province by two goals to one in the final played at the Vincent Dias Stadium. In the consolation final Sabaragamuwa Province defeated North Eastern Province by three goals to one to take the bronze medal. In the women's soccer tournament final North Western Province defeated Uva Province by two goals to one. In the men's kabaddi tournament final Western Province beat North Eastern Province 39-34 in the final. Western Province won the gold medal in the men's judo team championship with Central Province winning the silver medal. North Central Province had to be satisfied with the bronze medal. The champion Western Province team included K. D. Peiris, P. Asanka, P. Gunasekera, G. Seneviratne, R. de Seneviratne, A. Chandimal, M. Milan. Central Province won the gold medal in the women's judo team championship with Western Province winning the silver medal. Sabaragamuwa Province had to be satisfied with the bronze medal. The champion Central Province team included S. Kehelbedda, S. Wijesinghe, P. Wickremage, I. Priyadarshani, D. Witharana, K. Herath, S. Gunasena. |
