Centre stage for ICT

Information and Communications Technology (ICT) is set to take centre stage in Sri Lanka from November 29th to December 5th, with the hosting of three international ICT events in Colombo.

These three events are (Asian -Oceanian Computer Industry Organisation (ASOCIO) ICT Summit and Exhibition 2004, the International IT Conference 2004 and the International e-Governance Conference 2004, Chairman of the INFOTEL Society and industry stalwart Prof.V.K.Samaranayake told the media recently.

He said that the government has extended its support to the local ICT sector's efforts to organise these events by declaring them a national event.A Cabinet decision was also made to support the events by allowing duty-free imports of all exhibits and tax deductions of expenses incurred by sponsors and participants. The ASOCIO ICT Summit 2004 will bring together 600 delegates representing the ICT sectors and governments more than in excess 24 countries to participate in workshops, conferences and exhibitions that will span in two locations in the BMICH and Convention Centre, Prof Samaranayake said.

Industry driven ASOCIO 2004's massive exhibition and conference will anchor the 'National ICT Week' and will ensure that academia and civil society as well as the State and non-governmental sectors are afforded equal opportunities to particapte and benefit from all the dialogue, networking and information dissemination,Prof Samaranayake said .

The sixth International Information Technology Conference (IITC 2004) will be held from November 29th to December 1st with pre conference workshops on 27th and 28th. "As in previous years this conference will result in the presentation of over 25 research papers on ICT", he said.

The second International e-Governance Conference (ICEG 2004) will also be held from November 29th to December 1st in coincide with IITC 2004, he said.Print Media sponsor for this event is the Associated Newspapers of Ceylon Ltd.
