Humble push-cycle transformed into a 'flying machine'

by Chanuka Mannapperuma

Niranjan Weerakoon's efforts to transform the push cycle ,better known as the poor man's vehicle

into a comfortable one has borne fruit. Now there is an increasing demand for this "motorised bicycle" among the general public.

With dedication and commitment, Niranjan has modified the push bicycle as we know into a 'motorised bicycle' which could carry its rider at a speed of 65 kilometers per hour.

New invention “Motorised push bicycle

"It has achieved huge success," a jubiliant, Niranjan said adding that already they have sold 300 motorised bicycles.

"We have a good response and now this bicycle is very popular with school boys, public officials including Gramasewakas and those who are engaged in self- employment ventures," he said.

Niranjan attributed this popularity mainly to the fact that the bicycle is economically more viable and could ride through the whole day without any difficulty.Three people can easily ride,Niranjan said.

He extended his gratitude to Ceylinco Chairman,Deshamanya Dr.Lalith Kotelawala who had come forward to help him.

"Earlier nobody volunteered give financial assistance or any kind of assistance for the matter ,to develop the cycle. Fortunately now I am working under Dr.Lalith Kotelawala who has always come to my assistance ".

" He gave me financial assistance to develop my bicycle project.Earlier, for motorised push cycle, I have had to use chally motors which waight in at 45Kgs " Niranjan said. " Now for this motorised bicycle investing three million rupees, we are importing small motors from China. The motors weight is 9Kg. At the moment we have imported 300 motors."

"In our company (Ceylinco Niranjan Invention pvt Ltd), we sell a Chinese motor at Rs.9350.A bicycle with motor will cost Rs.17,990."

Niranjan is always committed to more experiments.'I am planning to set up a windmill tower to distribute electricity to 20 houses at Medirigiriya. It is five fold more efficient than solar power," Niranjan said adding that one tower would be sufficient for two houses.

"Through that we can generate many job opportunities as well," he noted.Among his other inventions are petrol manufactured by using rubber milk.

"In the near future fuel prices will increase further, so this invention will help to reduce foreign currency and become an alternative.
