PB records profit of Rs 1.4m

The People's Bank (PB) has recorded a half year pre- tax profit of Rs 1.4 million this year with a steady market growth of 11 per cent in terms of customer deposits.

The Bank has a deposit base of more than Rs 10 million of which one tenth are student deposits, PB Chairman P.Amarasinghe said at the launch of the "Sisu Udana Vishishtaya" an annual awards scheme to recognise and rewards the most outstanding achievers among school children, which will be held in December 2004.

He said that the Bank renews its pledge to serve the nation as a socialy responsible Bank that supports the country with the aim of creating a better tomorrow.

He said that as part of its social responsibility objectives it had undertaken to rehabilitate four tanks under the government's 1000 tanks rehabilitation program.

Amarasinghe commenting on this scheme said that Sisu Udana Vishishtayo is one of the social obligations that the Bank has inaugurated to create wellrounded personalties in the country.

CEO/General Manager Asoka de Silva said that this award scheme will support youth development by encouraging the growth and improvement of talent among our youth islandwide, while also supporting the most deserving schools that have produced such as outstanding talent.

He said that they are going to select 130 students who are below 20 years of the age from 24 districts who will receive prizes similar to scholarships based on six categorises-sports,drama,dance and singing, art, environment and conservation, while computer software and oratory will be the main areas of recognition for this awards. Head of Finance Bertal Pinto Jayawardena said that this program will recognise and reward ten outstanding youth selected from 24 districts in the country.

He said that the initial selection will be made on a district level basis and five recipients will be shortlisted from each of the 24 districts.

Ten national level winners will be identified and rewarded on the day of the awards ceremony.

Jayawardena said that PB will also reward ten under-privileged schools that have produced an outstanding youngster in their respective field.So if either of winners has a Sisu Udana Account or the school has a Sisu Udana Banking Unit, the prize money will be doubled.

The district winners of the Sisu Udana Vishishtayo will be awarded cash prizes of Rs 10,000 each and the national level winners will receive Rs 25,000 each. Meanwhile, the most deserving ten schools will receive a reward of Rs 50,000 each which will be specifically utilized for use in the school library, science laboratory or for sports equipment.
