Personality plus Discipline a stepping stone to success Positive thinking and self-confidence together with hard work are the pillars of success for Head of Marketing E.S. Sons Printers Jagathlal Perera. He was born the eldest in a family of four children, three boys and one girl. Perera's father was attached to the Royal Navy while his mother was a nurse. "My father was a strict disciplinarian and this taught us to complete a given job on time," he said. Perera was educated at St Joseph's College Colombo where he studied upto the Advanced Level examination. Once he completed the exam he joined the auditing firm of Someswaran Jayewickreme as he wanted to study accountancy." While there I got an opening to join Aitken Spence Printing as a Trainee Executive where I worked for nine years and got an opportunity to learn about the printing industry," Perera said. "After nine years at Aitken Spence Printing division I decided to move on and had my own printing company for ten years. After a decade of being my own boss I went back to the industry and joined E. S. Sons Printers as the Head of Marketing." " As I am flexible to changes I didn't feel the difference when I made the decision to work for someone else after being my own boss for ten long years," Perera said. At present there is a lot of uncertainty in the printing industry as most printers undercut each other to secure the "job" for themselves by reducing the prices. It is not a healthy situation for the industry as this leads to lowering of prices. We should compete on quality as this will help improve the standards in the industry. Or else if we lower the prices it will lead to severe problems in the industry, he said. There are about 100,000 employed in the printing industry which includes skilled as well as unskilled workers. There are many more employed by the printing industry in an indirect manner, Perera added. "The support and encouragement I receive from the chairman of E.S. Sons Printers Jayampathy Sumithrarachchi is immense," grateful Perera said. Speaking of future plans, he said that he wants to continue the good work and contribute to making the printing Industry in Sri Lanka 'the best in the world.' |
