On the fast lane to success

by Mahes Perera

Just yesterday they were known as 'Uth Max' with the song 'Vassanaya' a hit for them on TV. Today with that success behind him young Hiran Thenuwara and his vocal gang, gave themselves a more original name '6th Lane' to record their debut album 'The Nirvanaya LP'.

"6th lane the name of the band I thought was a good attention getter and goes with the youth scenario. My other three male vocalists are Chamath Janaka, Charles Lakshan, Tharaka Karunanayake and we have two female vocalists Rangika Dilushi and Sandamalie Kulasekera.

Our music has no limitations. We perform R&B hip-hop, rock, pop and Sinhala music. This debut album Nirvanaya is a compilation of original songs with imaginative lyrics in rap style which focuses on the everyday life of a young person" says Hiran Thenuwara who is confident that it will reach out to many of today's youth searching for that identity in society.

The album contains fourteen interesting tracks including 'Vassanaya' and 'Mal Pethak.' The varying rhythms in the arrangements influenced by Western styles mostly handled by the versatile Hiran T is quite arresting and ideally suited to the lyrics of the songs. The English song 'Sacrifice on a Lie' speaks of the vacillating nature of a young mind.

"Everything you said to me was a lie

Why you tried to hide your lies

Everytime you try to push me down

It makes me fly high in the sky...."

Others who poured in their thoughts for the songs are Ramya Thenuwara, Karunadasa Suriaratchi and Chamath Janaka. The album has been released under the M entertainment/Sony Music label.

Attractively designed with complete printed lyrics, the album is a must on your shelf. Already tracks from the album are being aired on radio and Hiran T attributes his success to his mother and father for the maximum support they gave. Of course he says he can't leave out Mr. C. A product of Royal College, Colombo now hoping to gain a medical degree, Hiran clues us into his

next vision - a concert and a second album. Good luck 6th Lane.
