CWC attends NACP by M.P. Muttiah The Ceylon Workers' Congress will take part at tomorrow's inauguration of the National Advisory Council on Peace (NACP). A spokesman for the CWC said Parliamentarians S. Jegatheeswaran, Faiz Mustapha and CWC Vice President R. Yogarajan will represent the Congress. The spokesman said that a meeting of CWC parliamentarians, members of provincial councils, local government institutions and district leaders of the organisation will be held at the CWC headquarters in Colombo today to discuss the present political situation. CWC leader Arumugan Thondaman who was on a private visit to India will arrive in Colombo to attend the meeting. A senior member of the Ceylon Workers' Congress welcomed the decision but said that the CWC had to look after the interests of the Up-country Tamils and support the majority government, irrespective of political upheavals. He pointed out that Thondaman had clearly stated this when the CWC joined the UPFA government last month. He confirmed the CWC would support the aspirations of the Tamil people for their rights, and at the same time it had to pay attention to various problems faced by the up-country Tamils and plantation workers. Minister Mangala Samaraweera assured last week that the demands put forward by the Ceylon Workers' Congress were compatible with the government program. "Therefore, to achieve these demands the support of the CWC to the government was essential," he added. |
