FM calls for consensus

by Ananda Kannangara

Finance Minister Dr. Sarath Amunugama on Thursday stressed that all major political parties such as the SLFP, UNP and the JVP, currently represented in Parliament must get together to seek a quick political solution to the North-East crisis.

He made these observations at a ceremony held in Colombo to coincide with the eighth Bakeer Markar Memorial Lecture, held under the theme

A souvenir being presented to guest speaker Dr. Sarath Amunugama by Imthiaz Bakeer Markar.

"The Challenges faced by Sri Lanka today". Dr. Karunasena Kodituwakku presided at the meeting, conducted by the Bakeer Markar Centre for National Unity.

"We are at a very crucial moment to seek a lasting solution to this most serious problem which disturbs the minds of all people irrespective of their ethnicity and therefore it is the duty of not only the rulers but also every citizen to help the Government in their endeavour of solving this.

The Minister also mentioned the importance of developing the economy when considering the living conditions of people.

"As we are aware that 70 per cent of people in the country are in the rural sector, therefore the authorities must focus special attention towards the development of agriculture, irrigation and also to provide them with necessary infrastructure facilities."

Dr. Amunugama also stressed the importance of adding more power to our national grid and said that the Government should start more and more power projects which were immensely needed to continue with future development plans.

Dr. Amunugama said increasing corruption is also another challenge the country faces today and therefore it is important to eliminate people who are indulging in various forms of corruption since it badly affects ordinary people.

Even some politicians, some officials in kachcheris, police and other similar important institutions are also indulging in corruption today.

Comparing some present day politicians the Minister also praised the political lives of the late Dudley Senanayaka and M.D. Banda who spent all their wealth for the benefit of people in the country.
