Unrest in Mannar by Anton Nonis Police, during a search on the location for clues on the killing of a Muslim at Kasal junction, Talaimannar last Thursday night, had discovered two kilos of heroin among the bushes, Vanni and Jaffna Deputy Inspector General, Baddewela told the Sunday Observer. The stock of heroin is said to have a value exceeding Rs. five million. The police curfew which was imposed on Friday morning was lifted in the evening, the DIG said. Immediately after the shooting, there was unrest in the area, with scores of unruly crowds, mostly Muslims, going on the berserk. Sources said that the LTTE was suspected to have carried out the killings. It may have led to the attack of two LTTE offices in Talaimannar and Pesalai by those going on the rampage. "However, the tense situation has been brought under control," the DIG said. Yet, the areas continue to be patrolled by combined Police, Army and Navy units. The victim had been identified as Ismail Mohammed, 30 who had been riding on the pillion. But the rider was unharmd. DIG Baddewela said, this indicates that the shooting had been done by someone waiting in ambush. Police have theorised that this was an incident as a result of animosities over the sharing of loot or something akin to it. The DIG said that the victim's house was searched on an earlier occasion by the Police for contraband of this nature. No arrests have been made in this regard. Further investigations are continuing under the directions of DIG Baddewela. |
