Anura Rohana 8th out of 54 by Lal Gunesekera Sri Lanka's professional, R. A. Anura Rohana, fared exceptionally well to finish eighth out of 54 golfers at the Amby Valley MGC Open of the Indian Professional Golfers Association (IPGA) Tour at Chennai recently. The tourney carried a total prize money of Indian Rs. 10,00,000 on a par 70 course. Rohana had a 6 under 274 with rounds of 69, 70, 69, 66, while Lalith Kumara (amateur champion of India, Pakistan and Bangladesh), who turned professional quite recently and figuring in his first tournament, finished in 32nd position with 284 (66, 68, 73, 77). According to a spokseman of the Sri Lanka Golf Union (SLGU), both Rohana and Kumara, played in two other tournaments (Hyundai Open in Chennai and Here Honda in Banglore) also on the IPGA Tour, but official details were not available due to a communication break down. Shiv Kapur of india won the A, by Valley MGC Open with an aggregate 264 (64, 66, 68, 66), while Digvijay Singh, who had won the Sri Lanka amateur title on two occasions, ended up fourth with an aggregate of 271 (67, 64, 69, 71). It will be recalled that Shiv Kapur won the gold medal at the 2002 Asian Games. Rohana, playing in the Tianjin TEDA Open in China in August in the Asian Professional Golfers Association (APGA) Tour, was 9th with an aggregate of 274 (66, 70, 68, 70), which was his first tournament for the year after coming right on top at the "Q" School in Poona India, where Lalith Kumara too qualified to play on the IPGA Tour which comprises 22 tournaments between August and April next year (2005) in India, Bangladesh, Nepal and Sri Lanka. In his first year as a professional last year (2003), Anura Rohana, was 96th in the order of merit on the APGA Tour out of over 300 players. Rohana is now in Malaysia with veteran K. A. Nandasena Perera playing in the World Cup (qualifying) for the Asian region which concludes today (Sunday). Twelve countries are playing in Malaysia of which four will qualify to play in the final round to be worked off in Spain in October-November. Meanwhile, trials are under way at the moment on the Ridgeways to pick four amateurs for the 44th Pakistan Amateur Championship scheduled to be staged later this month. Last year (2003), Lalith Kumara, won the title. |
