American Guy Edson to coach Lankan swimmers for SA Games by Leslie Fernando Sri Lanka Aquatic Sports Union has been successful in getting the services of a swimming coach and trainer from the American Coaches Association to handle the national swimming squad in preparation for the South Asian Games to be held next year in Colombo. Admiral Wasantha Karannagoda, President of SLASU said so at the press briefing held at the 80 Club on Wednesday night. Guy Edson who conducted the swimming clinic at the Peradeniya University Sports Complex early this year, will continue to coach the Lankan swimmers and the trainer will be selected after the World Coaches Clinic to be held later this year. Both the coach and trainer will begin their coaching stint from May next year. Karannagoda also thanked Sports Minister Jeewan Kumaranatunga and the Secretary S. Ranugge for providing the necessary finances so that the coach and trainer could make the trip to Sri Lanka. The national swimming squad will be selected after the National Swimming Championships that ended yesterday. The SLASU is also planning to select a national waterpolo squad with the view of participating in foreign tournaments especially in our region - South Asia and Asia Pacific regions. Conrad off to USA Olympic swimmer Conrad Francis will leave for USA tomorrow (Monday) to swim at the World Short Course Swimming Championships to be held from October 7 to 13 at Indianapolis, USA. FINA, the world controlling body for aquatic sports has recommended Conrad to participate at this mega event on his performances this year. Conrad who won two gold medals at the Asian Swimming Championships held in April in Macau, China was selected by the SLASU to represent Sri Lanka at USA meet, though he could not impress at the Olympic games in August. Conrad Francis will swim in the 50 metres butterfly stroke, 100 metres butterfly stroke and 50 metres breast stroke. Wing Commander Sanjaya de Silva, Tournament Director SLASU will go as the manager to USA with Francis. |
