President's Iran visit brings economic gains

Iran will supply oil to Sri Lanka on a subsidised grant scheme which is favourable to Sri Lanka.

This follows an agreement signed between Iranian President Mohammed Khatami and President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga during latter's official visit to Teheran early this week.

President Khatami following the signing of the agreement stated that 'mighty' nations would not like independent countries to foster an understanding.

The visit of the President and the agreement to seek fuel on a subsidy was described by political analysts as a blessing in disguise at a time oil prices sky rocketed at international level resulting in a spiralling cost of living.

President Khatami also conveyed Iran's willingness to send experts in oil and gas exploration to Sri Lanka.

The two leaders also discussed the internal conflict in Sri Lanka with President Kumaratunga giving a full brief on the current situation which was appreciated by the government of Iran. The President entered into five other agreements that covered areas such as commerce, culture, agriculture, science and technology, telecommunication, media, tourism, health in addition to a preferential trade agreement.

President Kumaratunga said that her government had an understanding on Iran's nuclear program which President Khatami said was for peaceful means.

The two leaders discussed avenues to enable high state officials of the two countries to travel between two countries without visas to set up a concept of a common Asia to strengthen the region. The President during her recent visit to New Delhi mooted this concept of a common Asia with a common currency to strengthen regional cooperation.

Extending a rare honour, President Kumaratunga was received by the Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Seyd Al-Khameini who while greeting the Sri Lankan President referred to the late Prime Minister Mrs. Sirimavo Bandaranaike as one of the leading political personalities in the Third World in her time. The Supreme Leader of Iran conveyed his sincere wishes to the Sri Lankan leader for success in her efforts to bring peace to her country and prosperity to her people.

The President briefed the Iranian leaders on economic and social developments in Sri Lanka. At the conclusion of her visit, the President extended an invitation to the Iranian President to visit Sri Lanka. (See also)
