Conference on Environmental Management Systems

The Sri Lanka Standards Institution held a National conference on Environmental Management Systems. This is the first National conference held in Sri Lanka on the subject of Environmental Management Systems based on ISO 14001, published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in Geneva.

The conference held in Trans Asia, Colombo was attended by a large gathering from Industries, Government Agencies, Hotels, Banks and Several other institutions representing a wide cross-section of stakeholders.

Chairman of the SLSI, Armyne Wirasinha, inaugurating the conference expressed how the SLSI is contributing to alleviate the adverse environmental impacts through the promotion of voluntary certification of industrial enterprises, business institutions and other organizations against ISO 14001.

B.S.P. Mendis, Director General of SLSI addressing the participants said that the SLSI had pioneered many a programme for the benefit of industrial and commercial sectors and that this conference marked yet another important contribution by SLSI towards the achievement of a greener industrial and commercial sector in Sri Lanka. Satish Rao, commencing the technical sessions, delivered the key note address.

He highlighted the current trends and developments in Environmental Management Systems elaborating on the recent emphasis on concepts like carbon dioxide trading in developed countries. Rao indicated that ISO 14001 certification is a stepping-stone to higher/advance certifications like Eco-labelling, carbon dioxide etc.

Director (Systems Certification), Dr. L.N. Senaweera, in his presentation covered the importance of integrating Management Systems like Quality Management Systems (ISO 9001) Environmental Management Systems (ISO 14001), Occupational Health and Safety Management systems (OSHAS 18001) and Social Accountability Standards (SA 8000).

Several certified companies by SLSI presented their experience in implementing and maintaining ISO 14001 compliant EMS systems. Several participants voiced their views about the benefits they have achieved and commented that sharing of experience by certified companies was of immense help to many other organizations who are in the process of developing their EMS conforming to ISO 14001.

The conference was sponsored by leading companies who have received ISO 14001 certification from SLSI. M/s. Hettigoda Industries (Pvt) Ltd, Unilever Sri Lanka Ltd, David Pieris Motor Company Ltd., Royal Fernwood Porcelain Ltd, and Kandalama Hotel presented papers at the conference, which were followed by useful discussions.
