Motorists with illegal tinted glasses beware!

Crime Sunday by Jaympathy Jayasinghe

Police and Security forces have been instructed by the Ministry of Public Security and Law and Order to check all vehicles plying on highways with tinted glasses to ascertain whether such vehicles have been authorised by the Motor Commissioner's Department to use tinted glasses.

The move to ban unauthorised tinted glasses on vehicles came into effect on December 1, after the Police launched an anti-crime operation in the Colombo city to flush out underworld figures from their hideouts.

The operation is co-ordinated by the Anti- Crime Unit at Police Headquarters, the Colombo Crime Division (CCD) and Crime Units coming under the purview of DIG Colombo.

The prohibition of unauthorised tinted glasses on vehicles was also due to several suspicious characters travelling about in luxury vehicles with tinted glasses. Police have found that criminals move about freely in Colombo city and in the suburbs in tinted glass vehicles.

Several persons arrested by the police have been carrying firearms with them. Recently on a tip off given by the Ministerial Security Division (MSD) the Welikada Police arrested three persons travelling in an Inter-cooler Pajero near the Parliamentary complex with two micro pistols and ammunition. What's more, two persons were from Batticaloa and Trincomalee while the third person from Ratmalana was a member of an underworld gang.

Last month the Anti-Crime Unit at Police Headquarters arrested three underworld men from Wattala and Grandpass areas travelling in such vehicles.

Meanwhile the Police Anti-Crime Unit at Police Headquarters headed by Chief Inspector Samudrajeewa have arrested a dangerous criminal last week linked to several killings in the Colombo city. Police are investigating whether the suspect was involved in the killing of a tea taster by shooting him with a pistol outside a bicycle shop at Nawala this year.

Another tea taster narrowly escaped death when he was shot at near the Maradana Traffic lights when his car came to a halt. The tea taster with serious injuries was admitted to the National Hospital, Colombo.

It had been found that a large number of vehicles plying on roads in the Western Province with tinted glass do not have permits from the Motor Commissioner's Department to do so.

The Public Security Law and Order Ministry has requested all motorists with tinted glasses to carry permits issued to them. Failure to do so will result in prosecution, police say.

Motorists have also being requested to carry with them their national Identity Cards or any other document to establish their identity along with the revenue licence.

Meanwhile the Public Security, Law and Order Ministry has decided to extend the date for surrendering illegal firearms by another two months to enable deserters from armed services to do so. The Ministry has decided to take stern action against those who possess illegal firearms after this date.
