Air Supply live in Colombo

by Mahes Perera

Best known for their towering love ballads Air Supply in 1976 broke new musical ground with a fresh trend in singing when rock was in full sway in Australia. Graham Russell and Russell Hitchcock first met when they were cast members in the stage production of Jesus Christ Superstar and their passion for music nudged them to step into a music career they never thought would result in global acclaim.

In 1977 the duo released their debut album which amazingly spawned two singles 'Love and other Bruises' and 'Empty Pages' no sooner it was released, and caught the Australian charts with success.

What followed next was an invitation to tour with Rod Stewart not only in Australia but in the US and Canada. Air Supply as the billboards cried out were 'an eye opener to the music industry.' Their popularity kangarooed and with it came the gold single 'Lost In Love' that upset many a global chart when the song occupied the No. 1 slot with success. This was the beginning of a string of worldwide hits and songs for Air Supply.

The group was acclaimed the most 'Successful Pop Group' and 'Best Pop Group' and they won awards for outstanding achievements. The media began to follow their career with interest and the American Top 40 and radio stations gave considerable airplay to their melodious style of love songs.

The more Graham Russell composed the more hits followed together with Gold and Platinum awards-Air Supply dominated the music scene during that era....and now they will be here for just one performance on Friday December 10 at the CR&FC grounds to thrill long time fans and reach out to new ones with their love songs 'All Out of Love', 'Lost in Love', 'Here I Am', "The One That You Love', 'Making Love Out of Nothing At All', 'Sweet Dreams,' "Two Less Lonely People in the World,' 'Yours Truly' and many more.

Air Supply always struck a universal chord with their music.

"Singing about love is the main reason for our longevity says Graham. "Our audiences keep coming back, only now they're bringing their kids." Says Russell "It wasn't always fashionable to sing our kind of music, but we've always stuck to our guns, and, I think, maintained our integrity." Be sure you are there on December 10 to experience their music - there's no better blend in the industry.... they are unique.....

Lost in love and I don't know much
was I thinking about
Fell out of touch
But I'm back on my feet
Eager to be what you wanted
So lift your eyes if you feel you can
Reach for a star and I'll show you a plan
I figured it out
What I needed was someone to show me.....
