Judge Ambepitiya killing :

Naufer's police friends interfere in investigations

Startling revelations have surfaced since the arrest of Potta Naufer, the chief conspirator in the slaying of High Court Judge Sarath Ambepitiya on November 19. A thorough check on the calls received and originated from the mobile phone of Naufer revealed that some senior police officials including a senior DIG, a DIG, some SSPs an ASP and some OICs in Colombo have had close rapport with the master mind.

Present investigations have revealed that some of these senior policemen had attempted to erase the recorded conversations from the computers of the mobile phone company since the arrest of Naufer. The two DIGs have served in Colombo and the suburbs from time to time and had helped the main suspect to carry on with his illegal activities. Investigations further revealed that a sum of Rs. one million had been paid to these police officers monthly.

Investigators said the senior DIG has had a lengthy conversation with Potta Naufer on the day previous to his arrest.

The suspect policemen had attempted to produce Naufer in Court within 24 hours of his arrest to prevent investigators obtaining further details from him.

However when he was produced in courts a detention order was obtained by the investigators. He was thus detained for six days during which time detailed information was extracted from the suspect.

Since the investigations were personally handled by the IGP himself he had told the investigators not to take orders from other police officers. This prevented interested policeman saving Naufer, investigators said.

Meanwhile, the President of the Police Inspectors Association Dale Gunaratne has written to President Kumaratunga, the Prime Minister and the IGP to take stern action against all policemen who have had dealings with Potta Naufer. (Courtesy: Silumina)
