Gas sellers' request turned down

by Anton Nonis

The domestic gas sellers are once again aiming themselves for jacking up gas prices at the earliest possible time, Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) Director General, Lal Abeygunaratne told the `Sunday Observer'. "They have forwarded their applications in this regard, urging the CAA's approval, but we have turned it down," he said.

While the Laugfs Gas had requested for a price increase of Rs.70 on a 12.5 kilogram cylinder, the Shell Gas had wants Rs.28.50 for a cylinder of the same gas content. Already, the CAA had allowed both these gas sellers two price increases in quick succession within the past three months.

Abeygunaratne said on both such occasions, there had been protests by the consumers that they cannot afford to bear-up such high prices though the sellers say that the prices had gone up in the world market.

The CAA has diagnosed that requests for price increases has now become a habit with the gas sellers.

However, Abeygunaratne said that the CAA weighs the `pros and cons' of both sides- sellers and the consumers, before arriving at the most appropriate price tag on gas cylinders without burdening any of the parties.
