Prof. Warnapala heads SL delegation for Buddhist Congress Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Prof. W. A. Wiswa Warnapala led the Sri Lanka delegation at the Second International Congress of Buddhists which concluded at Lumbini, the birthplace of Gautama Buddha on December 2. "Lumbini - the bastion of world peace and co-existence" was the theme of the Congress. Over 500 delegates from 28 countries including high level delegations from India, China, Bhutan, Myanmar, Cambodia and Egypt attended the Congress. Prof. Warnapala delivered a special lecture outlining the problems confronted by the world today and the solutions the humanity can expect by following the path enshrined by the Enlightened. He said that there is a clear path to world peace by following the scientific teachings of Lord Buddha. Buddhist leaders who attended the Congress have decided to develop Lumbini, the birthplace of Lord Buddha, as a Centre of Buddhist Studies and also to make use of this historic place to propagate the teachings and ideals of Lord Buddha aiming at stabilising world peace and harmony among nations. Prof. Warnapala is expected to make an indepth study of the implementation of a Master Plan for the development of Lumbini and the proposed to set up a Buddhist University in Nepal. A peace rally was held before the inauguration of the ceremony on November 30. His Majesty King Gyanendra inaugurated the Congress. |
