Over 500,000 sit O/L

Everything has been arranged to hold the G.C.E. O\Level examination - 2004 at 3,827 islandwide centres facilitating more than 501,000 students to sit for the examination from Monday, December 13 onwards. Examinations Commissioner General Mahinda Wijesiri confirmed that students in uncleared areas too would be facilitated to sit the examination with necessary security in special centres.

The examination which begins on December 13 will be held till 23. Over 30,000 examiners have been appointed to conduct the examination while a total of 374,411 schools and 126,819 private candidates are due to sit. The Commissioner General also said that the number of students who had applied for the exam was almost the same as last year.

He further said that paper marking would be done in two stages; the first stage from January 1 to 10 and the other from January 29 to February 6. Year end school vacation begins on December 10 and schools reopen on January 3 for the new year.

According to the Examinations Commissioner the schools selected for the first phase of the paper marking will commence on January 11. (DW)
