Standard Chartered completes another project at Cancer Hospital

To mark the 10th year of Standard Chartered Bank's affiliation with the Maharagama Cancer Hospital, they undertook an ambitious project to completely refurbish Ward 3 and 4 of the hospital.

The toilets were also completely renovated to make it easier and safer for use by the patients. On October 30, Vishnu Mohan, CEO Standard Chartered Bank ceremonially handed over the renovated and freshly painted ward to Dr. Yasantha Ariyaratne, Director of the Cancer Hospital, Maharagama.

Additionally the Bank and staff donated a nebulizer, fans and TVs to the ward. "As this was the 10th year of our association with the cancer hospital we are really delighted that we could undertaken such a significant project" stated Vishnu Mohan. The Bank (then Grindlays Bank) was the first corporate entity to come forward and assist the Maharagama Cancer Hospital in 1994 through their Staff Cancer Society.

Their first project was to renovated and equipped restrooms for the parents of patients in the children's ward. A ward they continued to maintain and support until 2001. They then took over the ward 3 and 4 of the hospital - the men's ward which they continue to maintain. Mohan went on to say, "Ten years ago the Cancer Hospital project was spearheaded by Lal Perera, ably supported by A. H. M. Farisz. Today, although they have retired from the Bank's services they continue to be an integral part of our work with the hospital".

Dr. Yasantha Ariyaratne, Director, Maharagama Cancer Hospital thanked the bank and its staff for their continued support. He stated that their commitment and tireless efforts had been inspirational and had provided invaluable assistance in the hospital effort to provide the best service and assistance to their patients. "The private sector can play a critical role in assisting us in the maintenance of the hospital and we hope many more will follow the example set by Standard Chartered Bank."
