All sectors turn blind eye to handicapped by Ananda Kannangara Considering the pathetic situation of a large section of people with physical disabilities in the country, it is the duty of the Government to enact legislation to provide them with suitable employment in both the public and private sector institutions, head of Human Resources, SriLankan Airlines Sunil Dissanayake said. He was speaking at the 33rd annual general meeting of the National Council for the Deaf (NCD), held in Colombo, presided over by senior director, Mrs. Maud Senaratne. "Although the relevant authorities had focused special attention on this issue, it was deplorable that so far no meaningful steps have been taken by any organisation to provide them with suitable employment," he said. "Most of the organisations never paid any attention to improve the living conditions of this sector nor provide them with suitable employment," he said. He said that among the 610 million people with disabilities in the world 386 million are of working age, but it is a pity that only a small percentage of them have been employed by the State and private sector organisations. "Therefore it is time for all concerned to create an awareness among both the public and private sector employers on the importance of providing vocational training for these physically disabled people," he said. He also said that in countries such as UK, USA and Canada, the attendance records of physically disabled workers were encouraging and they were prone to less accidents. Dissanayake also commended the invaluable service rendered by the NCD towards the needy deaf persons in the country by conducting schools for young deaf students and also providing hearing aids for needy deaf persons. |
