Reservoirs reach spill level by Anura Maitipe After a drought of nearly one and half years, the main hydro reservoirs have now filled up following heavy rains in the country during the last few weeks, an Irrigation Department spokesman told the Sunday Observer. He said that Kotmale, Victoria, Randenigala and Rantembe reservoirs had now been filled-up and the Mausakelle, Castlreigh, Laxapana, Samanala wewa, Kukule ganga and Udawalawe had reached spill level. After a long spell of drought the main irrigation tanks in Anuradhapura Polonnaruwa, Hambantoa, Monaragala, Ampara, Puttalam and Vavuniya have also filled up. The Irrigation Department has taken steps to open the flood gates of Parakrama Samudraya to release excess water. The authorities have warned the public and other visitors to these areas not to enter the main canals of these tanks for washing and bathing purposes since the flood gates of the reservoirs would be opened at any time to release excess water. |
