Lanka women win two golds

Sri Lanka's women athletes compacting in the 13th Asian Masters Athletic Championships here at Rajamagala Stadium won two gold medals to extend their total of golds to 14 yesterday, the fourth day.

They won in the 4 X 400 in relays for 50-55 and 60-65 age groups.

Meanwhile, there were three silver medals and three bronze too added to the Lankans tally making it 57 medals.

U. Seneviratne was placed second in the 2000. m steeple chase in the 40-45 category. In the 65-70 age group Mallika Sachithananda was placed behind Chinese Walker in the 5 km walk.

The third silver for the day was won by the quartet in the 50-55 women's 4 x 100 m relay. The team comprised T. Karunaratne. W. M. Mallikarachchi, L. T. Perera and H. R. Podimenike Bronze medals were won in the 4 x 100 m women's relay (50-55) C. H. K. Maheenatha (55-60) 5km walk and 4 x 100 in women (60-65) age group.

A 74 year old Indian athlete Atul Chandra Goswamy competing in the 5 km walk (70-75 age group) collapsed and died in hospital. He represented India for nearly a decade in athletics.
