Rain may continue for another 2 weeks by Anton Nonis The present wet weather conditions, persisting now for nearly five months has been classified as `abnormal' by the Meteorology Department. Satellite charts have indicated that the rainy spell may go on for another two weeks. Meteorology officials said that a similar phenomenon had occurred in the year 2000 too, when a rainy intermonsoon was followed by a rainy North-East monsoon. Meteorology Deputy Director, Jayatilleke Banda said the just ended intermonsoon had been much satisfactory this time, and had brought rain to many parts of the country during the intermonsoonal period. The intermonsoon remained effective from mid September to the end of November. The North-East monsoon which took over thereafter, now continues to bring rain further. The officials said that the heaviest bouts of rain had been in the Northern, North-Western, Uva, and the Eastern regions. Heavy rainfall had been received in areas of Batticaloa, Pottuvil, Vavuniya and also in the hydro-electric reservoirs such as Victoria, Randenigala and Rantembe. "When there are disturbances in the lower parts of the atmosphere within the North-East monsoon flow in the vicinity of Sri Lanka, heavy precipitation may occur over the Eastern and the North Central provinces," the Met. chief said. |
