The Path to Freedom released

The Department of Information has just published a book titled The Path to Freedom containing ten speeches made by the President on national independence days from 1995 to 2004. The Path to Freedom is presented by the Ministry of Information and Media on the occasion of the completion of 10 years in the office by the president.

The publication has been compiled and edited by the Department of Information on the advice and guidance of W. B. Ganegala, Secretary, Ministry of Information and Media. The first copy of The Path to Freedom was presented to the President by Mangala Samaraweera recently at Matara.

The Sinhala and Tamil versions were also released simultaneously. Ms. Bandaranaike was first elected to the office of the President in November 1994 and was re-elected in December 1999. During the intervening period she delivered nine addresses to the nation on every Independence Day. Her speech in 2000 was delivered by the Speaker of Parliament.

As we all know, at the time of the independence day in 2002 Ms. Kumaratunga was recovering from an injury after an attempt by the LTTE to assassinate her, on the eve of the 1999 Presidential Election.

The dominant theme that runs through this 74-page publication is none other than the President's mission of nation building and the imperative need for consensual politics and governance. Ganegala has made arrangements to distribute copies of The Path to Freedom to the diplomatic missions here and abroad, ministries, government departments and statutory institutions and the libraries.
