Muslim Peace Secretariat on way The Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) on Friday signed a Memorandum of Understanding(MoU) with the National Unity Alliance (NUA) for the establishment of a Muslim Peace Secretariat (MPS). Leader, SLMC Rauff Hakeem said the main objective of forming the Secretariat was to establish a Peace Resource and Research Centre, to develop an advisory forum and facilitate consensus building amongst Muslim political parties to deal with matters relating to peace process and also to establish formal relations with other peace structures such as SCOPP, the LTTE Peace Secretariat, SLMM, Norwegian facilitators and the United Nations. National Unity Alliance Leader Housing and Construction Industries, Eastern Province Education and Irrigation Development Minister Ferial Ashraff said the MoU had been able to bring two Muslim Parties together to make for a common goal for peace. Today, at 9.15 am the two main Muslim Parties, Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) and the National Unity Alliance (NUA), signed a comprehensive Memorandum of Understanding for the establishment of a Muslim Peace Secretariat. The two parties with majority Muslim representation in Parliament initiated this important development and will invite all other Muslim political parties and Muslim political formations to participate in this inclusive peace structure that will facilitate Muslim participation in the peace process. Both the Secretariat for the Coordination of the Peace Process (SCOPP) and the LTTE's Peace Secretariat have been informed of this development with the hope to establish formal and informal collaboration on issues of mutual concern and to work together on matters relating to sustaining the peace process. Primary objectives of this Peace Secretariat will include: the establishment of a Peace Resource and Research Centre; the development of an inclusive Advisory Forum dealing with matters relating to Peace Process; facilitate consensus building amongst Muslim Political Parties on the peace process; establishing formal relations with other peace structures such as SCOPP, the LTTE Peace Secretariat, SLMM, Norwegian facilitators and the United Nations. |
