MRI to diagnose mystery disease

by Jayantha Sri Nissanka

The "mystery disease" which instilled fear among the hospital staff and people in Embilipitiya and Matara will be diagnosed today once the MRI reports are released.

The Health Ministry requests people not to panic about the disease prevalent in these two areas. People in these two areas with normal fever and cough rushed to hospitals seeking immediate treatment.

Ministry took immediate steps to despatch masks and other protective equipment for hospital staff in the areas.

"We kept such patients who rushed for admission in panic and treated them over the past two days. We also educated the hospital staff not to panic about the disease", Deputy Director General of Public Health Services Dr. Manil Fernando told the Sunday Observer yesterday.

Dr. Fernando who visited Matara said "at the moment only a few cases have been reported and we are monitoring whether this disease is spreading". When asked whether they had identified the disease, he said, the MIR officials took samples from patients and the Ministry will know the results once the MIR reports expected to be released today.

Dr. Fernando declined to comment when asked about four patients reported dead due to the this disease."They might have died due to some other complication, but we will know it once the reports are released", he added. He said the Ministry took immediate measures to send a team of specialists to study the situation.
