Vaas 'bats' for needy school kids

by Srian Obeysekere

For some hundred odd less fortunate school children, Sri Lankan cricketer Chaminda Vaas was the draw recently.

For one, it was the first time these kids were meeting up with the cricketing hero face to face, and it was indeed a rare occasion to get his autograph and chat with him.

But above all, these school children from several schools in Norton Bridge and Maskeliya benefitted from over Rs.1 lakh of school uniforms, shoes, books and other stationery.

Incidentally, it marked the Lanka pace bowler joining the Muralitharan-Gunasekera Foundation for charity which was accordingly re-named the Muralitharan-Vaas-Gunasekera Foundation. The auspicious day was December 1 when Vaas toured Norton Bridge and Maskeliya to make the distributions.

"There are so many poor people including children who are dying of starvation for want of food and clothing in the country, and I feel that I must join to alleviate them from their suffering," Vaas told the 'Sunday Observer' on the eve of his taking wing for New Zealand with his colleagues on a month long tour.

Touching, on the tour ahead, Vaas said,"I'm so pleased that I've raised my level of batting to a higher platform, and am looking forward to carrying that form to the upcoming series."

The left-hander has in recent outings underscored his batting potential with some consistent knocks at international level. It reached a high in the recent domestic tournament when he clobbered 134 to take his club, Colts CC to the championship title from a not too rosy position when he walked to the crease.

The charity foundation was started sometime ago by Sri Lanka world record Test cricket bowler, Muttiah Muralitharan and his Manager, Kushil Gunasekera. "The foundation has so far undertaken various aid projects in helping the needy from the sick to the destitute and other deserving causes," Gunasekera, who happens to be the first manager of a Sri Lanka cricketer, said.
