Odour-free bins for housewives

by Hiran H.Senewiratne

Removing of kitchen waste like remaining vegetables and fruit parts, coconut refuse, used tea leaves, egg shells, left over food, meat and fish bones will no longer be a problem for housewives in the future with the introduction of scientifically manufactured garbage Bin.

Home-Fert Bin, developed by Vajira Agro Products (Pvt) Ltd, is made out of effective micro organism technology to prevent unpleasant odours coming out even if it is kept for three to four days in the kitchen, its Director,Jayantha Chandrarathne said. He said that the company is willing to work with local government bodies such as Municipal Councils and Pradeshiya Sabas as a solution to the ever increasing garbage problem in the country.

Currently, the company is doing a pilot project with the Kotte Municipal Council with ten houses in the area, which has got tremendous recommendations from users, Chandrarathne said.According to Chandrarathne, they have the capacity to supply any number of bins if there is a demand for the product.

Chandrarathe said that this light weight handy, biologically treated bin can keep waste for 14 -21 days completely closed at any place without emitting any unpleasant odour .

Chandrarathne said that the bin has a fixed tap which could be opened after 3- 4 days to remove the liquid from the bin once the garbage is put. One mili litre of this liquid can be diluted in one litre of water and it could be used for home garden plants, especially for horticulture.

Compost can be made by mixing the fermented waste with soil, saw dust or coir dust. This has to be kept for two days covered with a gunny bag or a polythene in a dry place without exposing to the rain.
