Kofi Annan Secretary-General of the United Nations yesterday appointed Ms. Margareta Wahlstrom as the Special Coordinator for Humanitarian Assistance in tsumami affected countries.

She will be in-charge of overall coordination of humanitarian assistance in all the affected countries. Ms Wahlstrom was to arrive in Sri Lanka yesterday (01 January 2005) to meet with the relevant government authorities and visit the affected areas.

She will be accompanied by Mr Arjun Katoch from the Office for the Coordination

of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) Geneva.
