President appoints DDMA for affected districts

President Chandrika Kumaratunga has appointed a District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) for each Tsunami affected district, President's office said.

A minister or a senior government official will head each Authority, in every district affected by the tidal wave. Government Agents have been appointed by gazette notification as Competent Authorities to the Authority concerned.

The Authorities will comprise a Chairman, representatives of the three Armed Forces, the Area Senior Superintendant of Police and all Heads of Government

Departments/Institutions in the respective areas. It would also include leading civil society members. They are to co-coordinate all relief activities, in the affected areas in the South, East, and North of the island, in a fair and equitable manner, depending on the needs of the area.

The Chairmen for the districts of Colombo, Gampaha, Kalutara, Galle, Matara, Hambantota, Ampara, Trincomalee, Puttalam and Batticaloa are, Minister Jeevan Kumaratunga, Reggie Ranatunga, Chief Minister Reginald Cooray, Minister Piyasena Gamage, Chief Minister Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena, Parliamentarian Chamal Rajapakse, Minister Ferial Ashraff, Minister Maithripala Sirisena and Deputy Minister D.M. Dassanayake respectively. V.Geevadasan is the Chairman for Jaffna, Mullativu and Killinochchi.

The Competent Authorities for the respective districts are, G.A.J. Sylvester, T.K. Ruparatne, Ravi Dissanayake, G. Hevawitharana, H.G.S. Jayasekera, M.A. Piyasena, M.H.M. Abeyweera, M.D.A. Rodrigo, H.M. Herath, G. Pathmanathan, Ms. M.D. Sukumala, T.Rasanayagam and T. Shanmugam.

The three Armed Forces Representatives of the respective districts are: Col. S.R. Manawadu (Navy), Capt. G.C. Jayawardena (Navy), Rear Admiral W.K.J.Karannagoda (Navy), Col. L.N.Wickremasuriya (Army), Brigadier W.A.M.U.R. Perera (Army), Com. S.M.C.K. Muthubanda (Navy), Lt.Col. C.P. Gallage (Army), Maj.Gen.S.Balasuriya (Army), Col. G.B.S.P. Gunaratne (Army), Maj.Gen. S.D. Tennekone (Army) and Col.L.A.D. Amaratunga (Army).

The Police officers for the respective districts are: D.G.L. Dissanayake, S.M. Wickremasinghe, A.D.U.S.K. Gunasekera, H.V.G.L. De Silva, C.D. Wickramaratne, M.K. Sugathadasa, K.D.N.J. Wijesinghe, M.P. Beddewela, Y.M.K.U. Ranasinghe, D.S.R. Wanaguru and M.P. Kumaradivakara.
