Probation and Childcare Services collect data about child victims by Chamitha Kuruppu The Probation and Childcare Services Department is now collecting data of all the children in refugee camps following last Sunday's tsunami. Once the data is collected, measures will be taken to provide shelter to children who have lost their parents in orphanages and homes that comes under the supervision of Probation and Childcare Services Department. A special team of the department along with Provincial Commissioners and Probation Officers in the disaster stricken areas will visit over 600 refugee camps around the country in order to collect information about the child victims, Probation and Childcare Services Commissioner Sarath Abeygunawardena told the Sunday Observer. The decision follows several complaints received from Southern Province about people who have taken home children in camps in order to provide them shelter and protection. There is no doubt that these people are trying to help the innocent children. But without proving clear identification it is not legal to take care of such children, Abeygunawardena pointed out. The Commissioner also stressed that most of the children who are still in a state of shock are unable to identify even their closest relatives. "Many relatives and neighbours are coming into the rescue of these children and willing to take them home, but there should be a proper way of doing things," he said. The department has decided to give top priority to the islandwide survey and once the data is collected steps will be taken to provide accommodation to children who have lost their parents in orphanages and homes that come under the supervision of the department, Abeygunawardena said. |
