SAARC Summit postponed In consultation with the Government of Bangladesh and all SAARC-member states, the Prime Minister of Pakistan, Mr. Shaukat Aziz, in his capacity as Chairman SAARC has announced the unanimous decision of SAARC member states to postpone the 13th SAARC Summit which was scheduled to be held in Dhaka from January 9 to 11, 2005. This postponement is warranted in the wake of enormous destruction caused by the recent severe earthquake and tsunami that has affected several Asian states, including SAARC members, which has traumatized the peoples of the region and obliged concerned governments to devote undivided attention to relief and reconstruction efforts. In this regard, the Prime Minister has addressed letters to leaders of all SAARC member states. The Government of Bangladesh will propose new dates for the Summit, which will be finalized after mutual consultations among member states. |
