Over 50 schools destroyed

Over 50 schools in tsunami stricken areas have been reported destroyed by tidal waves while the number is expected to rise more.

A special unit set up by the Ministry of Education has started collecting data to ascertain the number of schools destroyed in the tsunami tidal waves.

Nearly 15 schools were damaged in Kalmunai area where at least five schools were completely damaged. Akkaraipattu reported that five schools in the area should be reconstructed where two were completely damaged.According to the Zonal Education Office nearly 200 students were reported dead or displaced in Akkaraipattu.

Welfare camps were set up in 20 schools in Ampara providing shelter to over 76,000 tsunami victims. Ampara reported 4000 child victims, Kalmunai 1000 and Akkaraipattu 1500 in refugee camps. All these students have completely lost their houses and many were left without parents or families.

Two schools in Kalutara have been completely destroyed by tidal waves. Four schools require reconstruction and two schools to be cleaned in order to recommence academic activities.

Galle reported 12 schools affected by tidal waves where two schools were completely destroyed and at least another five with heavy damages. The principal of Hagalle Maha Vidyala is reported missing. Tidal waves have caused heavy damages to four schools in Tangalle, Hambantota district and three school principals were reported.

No schools in Killinochchi have been affected by the Tidal waves. However, no principals, teachers or educational officers in the area have reported to the Zonal Director of Education, P. Ariyaratnam. The Killinochchi Education office is yet to collect information about the number of students affected by last Sunday's tsunami. A top ministry official told the Sunday Observer that at least another week is required to carry out a complete data gathering and the information provided were most likely to change.

The ministry last week announced that reopening of schools was postponed by one week and assessment of GCE Ordinary Level Examination was postponed to January 3.
