USA provides massive aid

The United States has provided a massive emergency and long term humanitarian assistance of 400,000 US dollars to Sri Lanka in its efforts to recovery from the tidal waves disaster.

US President, George W. Bush announced this assistance package on December 29. 2.5 million US dollars has been granted to the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) mission in Sri Lanka as an emergency assistance. Both the governments of the United States and Sri Lanka, and the NGOs are working closely to coordinate aid efforts. Assessment teams are formed to determine where the aid could be utilised.

The United States has also provided 100,000 US dollars to the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society under Emergency Disaster Declaration Funds. As part of the international efforts, members of the three USAID Disaster Response Assessment Team (DART) would conduct assessments and coordinate assistance plans in Galle, Matara and Trincomalee.

The USAID's Office of Foreign Disaster Assistance (OFDA) is to sent in two flights, carrying 120 rolls of plastic sheet to provide shelter, two 10,000 litre water bladders and 4,200 water containers. The worth of these assistance is valued at 50,000 US dollars.

30 US military planning and logistics personnel coordinating US military diaster relief assistance to Sri Lanka. The DART team is working with the Sri Lankan government to determine both immediate needs that the US Department of Defence could provide, as well as mid-term and long- term reconstruction and rehabilitation operations, such as roads and bridges, medical teams and supplies.
