Korean government, business community generous with aid As a number of countries came to assist the Sri Lankan government to rebuild the nation after the uncountable disasters by tsunami waves last Sunday, Korean Government also extended their assistance with financial aid. Korean Ambassador Lim Jae-hong handed over a cheque for US$ 200,000 to President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga yesterday at the Presidential Secretariat. Meanwhile, Korean Embassy sources also revealed that Korean business community in Sri Lanka had also made their contribution in many ways. Kusang Lanka (Pvt) Ltd at Kandana had donated medicines from Korea worth Rs.300.000, relief materials and US$ 10,000 cash to the Prime Minister's office last Thursday. Another Korean company Young An Lanka (Pvt) Ltd had also planned to distribute foodstuff worth Rs. one lakh to the affected people. They have also already informed the authorities that they were willing to provide accommodation for tsunami victims in their factories. The Embassy officials further said that Poongkook Colombo (Pvt) Ltd at Habarakanda would provide factory made bags in addition to a cash donation of US$ 4,500. Meanwhile, Elphis Lanka (Pvt) Ltd at Ekala has decided to donate US$ 90,000 to assist the affected people. They would also establish an `Emergency Relief Team' and they would be on duty in affected areas with relief kits worth of US$ 50,000. (DPL) |
