Heavy rain in Batticaloa

by Anura Maitipe

Some parts of Batticaloa district had been flooded following heavy rains and it inconvenienced the distribution of food and other essential goods for Tsunami victims, Additional District Secretary, R. Punniyamoorthy told "the Sunday Observer".

He said that "most of the roads in the coastal belt were destroyed by Tsunami disaster, we had to find alternative ways to transport food and other essential items to displaced families. However, following heavy rains some of these roads too have submerged and caused inconvenience in supplies.

District Secretariat initiated special boat services to provide uninterrupted relief services for 60,000 displaced living in 94 camps, he added.

He said that sanitary facilities in these camps were very poor and this could result in spreading of water-borne diseases, due to lack of sufficient water pumps, squatting pans, septic tanks and detergents. He urged the public to donate these urgently needed items. A Ampara district secretariat spokesman said that in his area too had affected with flood due to heavy rains during last two days but distribution of food, medicine and other essential commodities had not been interrupted.

He warned of the possibility of spreading of water-borne diseases and urged the public to donate squatting pans and septic tanks and germ killers.

Meanwhile, Meteorological Department sources said that highest rainfall of 350mm has reported from Batticaloa and 289.5 mm from Ampara.
