GMOA warns of child 'snatchers'

by Shanika Sriyananda

The Government Medical Officer's Association (GMOA) warns of attempts of some people to 'snatch' little children, who have become parentless and homeless due to tsunami waves and requests the government to take immediate action to open separate probation units in nearby base hospitals in affected areas to provide temporary security for these children.

The GMOA says that they have information about some people who tried to sell children in refugee camps in Hambantota and Galle. "Some identifying themselves as children's guardians and others as relatives have tried to sell them. Some tried to give the infants for adoption", Dr. Uditha Herath of the GMOA, said.

According to Dr. Herath, the little girls in these camps run the risk of being abused. "Nearby hospitals will be the ideal place to provide maximum security for these children as hospitals can provide food, medical attention and even security for these children till they re-unite with their parents or till they are transferred to children's homes", Dr. Herath said.

The GMOA also requests the government to take action to evacuate all the parentless children from these camps and to keep them under the supervision of the Child's Protection Authority.

It also invites all non governmental organizations dealing with children's welfare to join hands with the GMOA to safeguard these children.
