Japan PM to attend summit on tsunami

TOKYO, Saturday (AFP) Japan's Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi plans to attend an international summit to be hosted in Indonesia to discuss how to help overcome the tsunami catastrophe, a report said Saturday.

Given the tremendous damage caused to countries along the Indian Ocean coastlines, Koizumi has judged the national leader himself should attend Thursday's meet, Jiji Press news agency said without citing sources. No immediate comment was available from the prime minister's office. Indonesia, the country worst hit by the Asian-wide tsunami disaster, said Friday it would host the major summit to discuss strategies for overcoming the catastrophe and raising more aid.

Japan's government has so far pledged 40 million dollars in aid to the tsunami victims and sent more than 120 emergency relief workers and three naval ships to countries hit by the tragedy.

The conference in Jakarta will gather senior officials from countries around the Indian Ocean which have counted tens of thousands of deaths as seismic shockwaves buried their coastlines in water.
