by Elmo Leonard

Unimo Enterprises Ltd, a fully owned subsidiary of United Motors Lanka Ltd won a tender for 27 4-wheel tractors, floated by the Ministry of Infrastructure Development in the East.

These tractors of Indian make called Farmtrac are being introduced to Sri Lanka following an agreement signed last week between Unimo and the Indian supplier, Escorts Ltd. These Farmtrac 60 model will be used to provide drinking water for people in the East, affected by the recent tsunami.

The Farmtrac brand won the tender edging out brands of tractors, established here. The Farmtrac make, carries many advantages including the large 4-wheel tractor which saves a litre of fuel per hour compared with other popular makes, Unimo chairman, Mahendra Amarasuriya said.

Two models are being marketed here, being the Farmtrac 45 version, which carried 45-horse power and Farmtrac 60 which is a 50-horse power version. The introductory prices of these models effective till March 31 are Rs. 810,000 and Rs. 865,000, Amarasuriya said.

However, on demand, and bearing that the Farmtrac range is intended to be marketed for the use of the construction industry, any of the Farmtrac range could be imported on request, the company's deputy chairman, S. B. Hewage said.

This range includes backhoe loader/front end loader, backhoe loader/dozer, used on a heavy duty 4-wheel tractor. Farmtrac 70 which is a 60 horse power workhorse.

An annual US$ 500 million company, Escorts is widely regarded in India as the pioneer in farm mechanisation and one of the leading conglomerates in the field of engineering in the subcontinent, Escort's head of exports in India, Pradeep Kumar said. Escorts also has footholds through its subsidiaries in telecommunications, healthcare, automotive and railway, ancillaries, information technology and financial services.

Escorts commenced the manufacture of 4-wheel tractors 50 years ago as a total Ford collaboration. Today, Escorts is on its own, while having improved its technology, Kumar said.

The Farmtrack range of 4-wheel tractors is in configurations from 27 to 75 horse power. While Farmtrac is rated to have the second largest market share in India, the Indian make has a strong presence in South East Asia, some parts of the Middle East, some places in Europe, Africa and USA.
