Tea for all

by Umangi de Mel

Their lives are spun around the simple things that mother nature has to offer. Their main income being the evergreen tea cultivation, the tea pluckers live in a world of their own breathing in the essence of the enchantingly beautiful countryside and this is brought to life by three artists Edwin Batawala and the father and son team of Zdenek and Michael Thoma, in a series of unique paintings and photography, under the theme 'Tea in the first sense'.

Batawala, an artist since 1960 learnt his first lessons in art at the Government College of fine Arts. Having worked at the Small Industries after graduation Edwin pursued his ambition to be a full time artist. Now, a renowned artist in the field, his life revolves around exhibitions, meetings, festivals and seminars on art.

Edwin inspired by the beauty and simplicity of rural life has painted the innocent village folks living by the tea estates, capturing their moods and moments.

"Dilhan Fernando, director at Dilmah gave me the idea to go to these estates to get a taste of their life styles. It was a new experience. I actually saw a side of life that I hadn't seen before.

They may not be wealthy but they're happier and their lives are simpler," he says.

'Tea in the First Sense' the photography and Art exhibition of Ceylon Tea, organised by Dilmah Tea was launched on March 8th at the hotel Trans Asia.

The Czech father and son team, Zdenek Thoma and Michal Thoma have worked extensively in Asia including the tea growing regions of China and India as well as Japanese gardens.

The exhibition, yet another innovative endeavour by Dilmah, to promote the world's finest tea, around the globe, will end shortly.,
