Economy will be revamped

by Rohan Mathes

Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse asserts the tsunami-stricken economy of Sri Lanka will be revamped through the development of rural entrepreneurship. The premier participating as the Chief Guest at the Kandurata Aruna Mega Trade Fair at the BMICH Friday, said, "the mobility of rural entrepreneurs to the city resulting in a blend of rural-urban entrepreneurship of joint ventures has paid dividends.

By assessing the needs of both the local and the international markets, the rural entrepreneur has succeeded in accessing the international market and obtaining overseas orders as well".

He pointed out that even the indigenous Veddah community has benefitted by contributing to these joint ventures in their characteristic fields of industries. The Fair envisages to introduce the rural industrialists to the local and overseas markets, by which process, rural, youth unemployment could be solved.

"Following the unprecedented success of the Ruhuna Aruna 2004, today we have Kandurata Aruna. We will take Rajarata Aruna to Anuradhapura shortly and then go nationwide to develop the entire country", Mahinda Rajapakse added.

The Mega Fair had been organised sans any government expenditure by the Prime Minister's office in collaboration with the Chambers of Commerce and other relevant ministries, for the purpose of introducing the Small and Medium-scale Entrepreneurs (SMEs) to the international markets through Information and Communication Technology (ICT), ensuring them their due income.

Technology and National Enterprise Development Minister Rohitha Bogollagama has already established a separate bank for SME's sector with an initial Rs.2000 million deposit in this regard. Central Province Governor Monty Gopallawa, Western Province Governor Alavi Moulana, Labour Relations and Foreign Employment Minister Athauda Senevirathna, Enterprise Development Minister Rohitha Bogollagama, Estate Community Infrastructure Minister C.B. Ratnayake and Chief Uruwarige Tissahamy among others participated at the function.
