To provide immediate relief for those affected by the tsunami disaster, the Transitional Accommodation Project (TAP) has embarked on an expeditious plan to construct temporary houses for displaced persons.

The first phase of the project will consist of 10,000 houses to be constructed before April this year. It was learnt that land for construction of temporary houses have been identified by the District Secretaries.

Priority will be given to displaced persons living in welfare camps in schools and to those living in tents before the commencement of monsoonal season. Displaced persons who own land will be permitted to construct both temporary and permanent houses with approval from the District Secretaries.

Meanwhile fifty graduate trainees from the Public Security and Law and Order Ministry who received training in rehabilitation work at camps were despatched last week to affected areas. They will be attached to offices set by the Commissioner General of Essential Services co-ordinate relief work and will work in close collaboration with the District Secretaries and Non Governmental Organisations.

The Commissioner General of Essential Services Tilak Ranavirajah last week briefed graduates trainees to identify problems related to displaced persons and to find solutions by bringing it to the notice of all NGOs and District Secretaries concerned to find solutions.

The temporary houses will be constructed by international and national agencies such as UNCHR, International Organisation for Migrants (IOM), OXFAM KARITAS. Oxfam will provide timber and other raw materials along with local suppliers for construction of houses. Each temporary house will have a capacity of 200-250 square feet and will not cost more than Rs 40,000.
