More programs to support tsunami victimised children by Ananth Palakidnar The North-East Provincial Council has initiated several childcare programs coordinating with the UNICEF to help children affected by the tsunami. According to a survey carried out by the North-East Provincial Council the tsunami which had severely ravaged the North and East made 740 children orphaned and 2151 children having lost one of the parents. The Social Services Department of the North-East Provincial Council which looks into the social welfare services along with the Probation and Childcare Services has taken immediate steps to appoint 19 probation officers and 21 child rights promotion officers on contract. In addition, 65 graduates who were given an initial training have been appointed to study and take follow up action with the help of the UNICEF and Save the Children. To help the children affected by tsunami in the North and East the UNICEF has agreed to send 5000 family kits comprising basic needs of children both personal items and leisure items. Informed sources said the Social Services Department has made a request for funding from the UNICEF for a sum of Rs. 16,782,000 to assist foster parents who look after the children orphaned by tsunami. The request for the sum includes monthly allowances, school support and self-employment grants for 250 families who function as foster parents. Project reports have also been submitted to Save the Children and GTZ to provide the orphans with essential items which would be useful for their schooling and other extra curricular activities. A foster care program has been arranged with Children's Emergency Relief International (CERI) in Batticaloa and later to be expanded to other districts, informed sources said. |
