Protest against privatising 'Free Education' Higher National Diploma in Engineering (HNDE) Students' Association agitated against setting up of private medical colleges, conducting fee levying engineering courses introducing another examination for university entrance and some efforts to decrease the quality of education, at a demonstration held at the Totalanga junction last week. HNDE Students' Association president Kolitha Samanthilaka told the Sunday Observer that some invisible hands have come forward to dilute free education which has benefited sons and daughters of our motherland. Samanthilaka said that the threat to eradicate the free education system came in various ways and this time decisions of setting up of private medical colleges, charging fees for engineering courses in universities and new examination for university entrance had come about. The HNDE Students' Association president also said that those decisions were not for the betterment of free education, but to close all the doors for the poor students of our country. He also said that the demonstration they had last week was not an isolated struggle, but all the university students are against the efforts of destroying the free education system. |
