Four faculties of Colombo University closed by a staff reporter Colombo University Vice Chancellor, Prof. Tilak Hettiarachchi declared the university out of bounds to students of the Arts, Law, Education and Management and Finance faculties indefinitely following the turbulent environment as a result of student politics. The Faculty of Management and Finance was closed on March 09 due to a clash between two student groups when some were injured and hospitalised. Meanwhile, the University administration had to take some decision regarding the other three Faculties by Friday 11 as the two student groups that contested the Arts Faculty Student Council election resorted to post violence. According to very reliable sources the Vice Chancellor has banned the politics of the Arts Faculty Union as student leaders allegedly aligned to an Opposition party have been troubled within the university to embarrass the Government. Last week all Universities in the country made a joint protest expressing their reservations over some of the reforms to the education system that were contemplated by the Education Ministry. Responding positively to the average student voice the University Grants
Commission (UGC) clarified that no State University would be privatised
which assurance satisfied the student leaders. |
