Sit-in protest on A9 by Rashomi Silva Angry mobs at Chavakachcheri, the second largest town in Jaffna on Saturday blocked the main A-9 road from Chavakachcheri to Kodikaman, a stretch of road about 5km. They organised a 'sit-in protest' over police tear gassing a mob protesting against an Army vehicle knocking down a cyclist. The Army said the cyclist was trying to overtake from the left and met with the accident as a result. The cyclist S. Manoharan 45 was admitted to Jaffna hospital and was discharged later. According to the Army the incident occurred Friday afternoon. The mob tried to set fire to the Army vehicle and stoned at sentry points and government property in the vicinity. Reporting the incident the 'Tamil net' web site said the Police had used tear gas at the mob and had caused damage to private property. An official from the Army media unit said that the Police had to use tear gas to disperse the mob, but they were not informed about any damages to property. "But the mob says that there are damages to property and claims compensation for the damages," he said. Jaffna SSP, K.D.L Dalpadadu and some officials from the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM) visited the scene to discuss the matter and to persuade the protestors to go home, the media unit said. |
