German NGO provides aid for children Our report on Sunday of March 6 under the heading was based on a one to one chat between our reporter Chanuka Mannapperuma and Sylvia Merkle Chairperson, Country Representative of "Sunil's friends" a German funded Non Governmental Organisation (NGO) Ms. Merkle has written to us that the report contains some wrong information. Here we carry Ms. Merkle's version. " Ms. Mannapperuma wrote that every sponsor provides Rs. 37,000, for a child every month. This is wrong! A sponsor provides Euro 15 evey month, which is about Rs. 1,950, Rs. 1000-are provided for food, education and sanitary items for the children and is therefore transferred to the children's home to give the home an long term financial security. The balance money (Rs. 950) is saved on a bank account in Germany and every child, regardless how many years the sponsorship for the child has been existing, receives Euro 450 (about Rs. 58,000) as a start up money when it reaches the age of 18. We transfer this money to the child's bank account. It was written that the eight volunteers working with us are all working in the Tudawe Children's Home. First of all, there are four volunteers working with us, not eight. The other three employees are locals. And the volunteers are not working in the Tudawe Home. They are here to do disaster relief and are working mostly in the camps
in the South, from Kosgoda to Ambalangoda and also at Hambantota." Any
negative consequences to Sunil's friends is regretted. |
