Alliance still tight-knit - President

by Anura Maitipe

Although we have different views on several issues all constituent parties in the United People's Freedom Alliance (UPFA) are well bound and nobody can split the Alliance, President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga told the 15th National Convention of the SLFP held at the Youth Services Centre, Maharagama.

"In the face of various obstacles following the tsunami disaster we have achieved better economic development than the UNP era. The government is dedicated to find a lasting solution to the North-East conflict through negotiation settlement.

"I highly appreciate the unstinted support extended by our party members and the peace loving mass of the country to find negotiated settlement to the North East issue which has been dragging on for the last two decades.

When the People's Alliance government was in power we tried our best to bring a peaceful settlement to the North East conflict. Our stand was very firm on this issue. We are always for a peaceful solution. Most schools were rehabilitated and roads were reconstructed. The UPFA pioneered by the SLFP put the country back on the right track.

And in our economic policy we have given prominence to local producers and local manufacturers. The government has taken initiatives to modernise the irrigation network to uplift the farming community while encouraging medium and small scale industrialists in the country.
