Make taxation professional - Dr. Amunugama by Ananda Kannangara Finance and Planning Minister Dr. Sarath Amunugama addressing the inaugural convocation for enrolment of associates at the Sri Lanka Institute of Taxation (SLIT) held in Colombo on Thursday highlighted the necessity of introducing a very professional taxation system in the country. SLIT, Vice President M.N. Gunasekera presided. The Minister said that the time has come to look into our current taxation policy in a serious manner and all officials who are specialised in taxation must develop it to achieve the expected target. Minister Dr. Amunugama also paid a glowing tribute to the officials of the Tax Department for the excellent service rendered by them to upgrade the taxation system in the country during the past several decades and requested the young award winners of the SLIT to study novel taxation policies of other countries as well. Finance and Planning Ministry Secretary Dr. P. B. Jayasundara said that the major stakeholders in taxation are the tax policy makers, tax administrators and the tax paying community and also remarked that they did not properly perform their functions. "Most of them do not know about tax administration properly," he said. He said the Government had now focused its attention towards modernising and strengthening the Inland Revenue Department with financial assistance given by the Asian Development Bank with the objective of introducing a new tax culture in the country. Jayasundara also highlighted that proposals for taxing public servants are expected to be presented to the Parliament. |
